Venue - Product page - Hide and group variant images

From Venue 18.0.0 onwards, you have improved control over how product images and media are shown on your product page galleries. If your product has multiple variants with multiple images, the gallery can quickly become cluttered and overwhelming for shoppers. This feature allows you to:

  • Hide inactive variant images until the shopper selects that variant.
  • Group media by variant in the Shopify admin for a cleaner, more intuitive gallery.

This makes your product pages easier to browse and ensures customers only see the images that are most relevant to their selection.

Key features

  • Only show media for active variant

When enabled, shoppers will only see images linked to the variant they select. For example, if they choose 'Blue' as the color, only the grouped blue product images will appear.

  • Group variant media in the product editor

In the Shopify admin, you can drag and reorder media in the product editor. Place all images for a variant together, and the theme will use this grouping to display them in the gallery.

Enable variant image hiding

To activate this feature, simply check the box labeled Only show media for active variant.

You’ll find this option in the Product information section of the product page settings in the theme editor (highlighted in pink in the screenshot). When enabled, the product gallery will only display images associated with the currently selected variant. All other media will be hidden until a different variant is selected.

Note: this variant media hiding feature is only available on the full blown product page and not in the Featured Product section.

Group variant media in the product page admin

When you assign an official variant image in Shopify, that image acts as the trigger for grouping all the media that follows it.

For example, in the screenshot above the pink tee has been set as the official variant image. Every image that comes after it in the media list will be grouped under the pink variant — until the next variant image is encountered.

In this case:

  • The two images after the pink tee (the tee alone and the model shot) are both grouped under the pink variant.
  • When the system reaches the navy tee (set as its own variant image), the grouping switches, and any subsequent images will belong to the navy variant.

This logic ensures that each variant (like grey, pink, navy) has its own defined set of images, making the gallery dynamic and accurate for shoppers as they click between options.

Add a featured image to all groups

In addition to assigning variant-specific images, you can also include at least one 'featured' image that appears in every variant group. In the example below our featured image contains models wearing all three colours of tee shirt.

To do this, simply place the featured image among the media group for every variant. In this example you would need to upload this image three times to your media library.
